About me

My name is Jennie Garris. I am a credentialed Orton-Gillingham Practitioner, certified with The Orton-Gillingham Academy at the Certified level. I serve students with dyslexia and students who struggle with spelling, reading, and writing. Using a structured literacy method, I provide an individualized, direct, explicit, systematic, multisensory, diagnostic, and prescriptive teaching approach both in-person and online.

I am a mom of 4 boys, 2 of which have dyslexia. Being a parent of dyslexic learners has given me the unique opportunity to see and experience what it’s like to educate children who learn differently. I have a great amount of empathy and respect for struggling students and tailor each lesson to support their specialized needs.

I am passionate about bringing dyslexia awareness to everyone. I am an advocate for dyslexia and have testified before the South Carolina House of Representatives Education Sub-Committee for the dyslexia bill 4434, which became law in 2018. I have addressed the CCSD School Board members concerning dyslexia in Charleston County, prompting a dyslexia pilot program in a CCSD school. I also volunteer at The Orton-Gillingham Center of Charleston as their Parent Mentor.

My purpose as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner is to build confidence in children by offering the best educational experience for dyslexic and struggling readers.

One thing we know for certain about dyslexia, is that it is one small area of difficulty in a sea of strengths.
